I was reading a book the other day and a comment from one of the characters really resonated with me. "Our beliefs are without conviction--commitment without honor." It is so easy to get caught up in the hype today. We are inundated with what our beliefs should be every day from our loved ones, the people we work with, and even our government. We spend so much time trying to conform to what everyone wants us to do that we forget that we are the only ones responsible for our beliefs. I think this is where the "without conviction" comes in. We say we believe something to fit in, but we don't really take it to heart. We make a "commitment without honor".
I have been thinking about my beliefs lately and quite frankly, I need to give it more thought as I am not sure what all my beliefs are. It's amazing that I am going to be fifty years old this year and I am still not clear about all my beliefs. I have done what most of us have done. Floated along through life not really seeing and living, just existing. Don't get me wrong, it hasn't been a bad life so far. But I know I can do better. I want to create the rest of my life with conviction and commitment with honor.
